The government currently provides additional funding to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding – provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport – is allocated to primary school head teachers. This funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools.

How we use our funding

Schools should use the funding to:

  • Develop or add to the PE and sport opportunities and activities which we already offer.
  • Provide existing staff with teaching resources to help them teach PE and sport
  • Hire specialist PE teachers / qualified sports coaches to work with teachers
  • Support and involve the least active children by running or extending school sports clubs.
  • Run sport competitions and increase pupils’ participation in sports activities with other schools.
  • Build capacity and capability within the school to ensure improvements made now will benefit pupils joining the school in future years.

There are five key indicators which schools should expect to see improvement across:

  • The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – the Chief Medical Officer guidelines recommend that all children and young people aged 5 – 18 engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, of which 30 minutes should be in school.
  • The profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement.
  • Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport.
  • Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils.
  • Increased participation in competitive sport.

The Sports Premium Report explains how the school invests this money in school sport and pupil health and wellbeing. It outlines our yearly allocations including how we have spent previous years allocations and our intentions for the current academic year. It outlines the impact we have had so far and the ways in which we are ensuring sustainability of our strategy.
Impact of the Sport Premium on Children at Richard Taylor School
At Richard Taylor CE Primary School, we have researched and identified several areas which we aim to improve and enhance, using PE and Sport Premium funding, participation rates and achievement for all pupils in PE, sport and physical activity. We have developed an action plan to ensure this funding is invested to maximise the long-term impact of our PE, sport and physical activity provision for pupils and staff.
Funding received through the sports premium has resulted in the following impact on pupils and their sports provision at Richard Taylor CE Primary School:

  • We are a fully active member of the Sporting Influence competitive sports programme, frequently attending sports fixtures and festivals
  • We have an established link with St Aidan’s High School PE Department who provide sporting opportunities for our children to participate and provide sports leaders to help run our sports day.
  • Achievement of the Gold School Games Award for 2024, which recognises the high quality provision of active and competitive sport in school, links with sports clubs and participation in a wide range of sports.
  • Equipment purchasing and replenishment ensures that the ‘one each’ principle of PE resourcing remains in all national curriculum PE activities.
  • Funding has contributed to developing a wider range of after school extra-curricular provision.
  • Funding has contributed to the development of our curriculum offer using REAL PE to support all staff to deliver high quality curriculum PE.
