Enriching the lives of children at Richard Taylor School

At Richard Taylor School one of our core goals is to deliver a curriculum, rich in experiences, which stimulates and challenges all learners. We believe that enrichment creates confident, resilient, happy and successful learners prepared for the next stage of their journey.

We encourage our children to develop important life skills through enrichment and engage with the wider community in practical, enjoyable, and meaningful ways.

Ofsted emphasises the importance of personal development and extending the curriculum beyond academic achievement

The school provides children of all ages to participate in additional sporting activities and competitive sporting competitions during the year. We work in partnership with Sporting Influence to offer competitive sporting activities during the year. In addition, we work alongside Harrogate Town to offer after school football training. During the year we will hold after school clubs for a range of sports including netball, cricket and tag rugby as well as providing opportunities for the children to access taster sessions in more unusual sports including Judo and archery.
We ensure that all children can swim before they leave school with focussed swimming lessons for children in years 3 and 4.
In October 2024 we were awarded the Gold Sports Mark by independent assessors for our commitment to physical exercise and sport.

Our re-developed wildlife garden provides us with an outstanding platform to deliver a Forest School curriculum. Forest School is a child-centred inspirational learning process, that offers opportunities for holistic growth through regular sessions. It is a long-term program that supports play, exploration and supported risk taking. It develops confidence and self-esteem through learner inspired, hands-on experiences in a natural setting. Miss Sherwood as our qualified Forest School Leader delivers weekly sessions which the children love.

The school has a rich history of promoting music beyond the curriculum. We have a very active choir consisting of children from Year 3 through to Year 6.  They meet every week on a Tuesday after school and regularly perform both in school and at events in Harrogate.  Last year, performances included concerts at the International Centre and the Royal Hall.

We regularly attend the ‘Sing Up’ stadium singing events in Manchester and ensure that all children access opportunities to sing traditional and contemporary songs.

We can offer peripatetic music lessons in a wide range of instruments, including keyboard, violin and woodwind instruments. We also work in partnership with ‘Rock Steady’ to offer children the opportunity to learn electric guitar and drums in bands, which perform for parents through the year. Details of music lessons can be accessed via the School Office.

The school offers a range of non-sporting after school activities through the year. These run from 3.20pm until 4.20pm. Activities run for 6-week blocks and will be repeated if oversubscribed. Clubs include Art Club, Chess Club, Zen Club, Lantern Building Club, Board Games Club and Animation Club.

Our children are passionate advocates for the planet, they regularly participate in local and global environmental campaigns. These include protecting local habitats and working with the elderly. The school holds termly community teas where the children in year six host elderly members of the community. All the children in key stage two participate in ‘Project Care’ working with a team from Harrogate District Hospital they learn the challenges that the elderly can face and how they can help them in simple ways.

We are proud to be a hub space camp school. We hold space camps through the year when classes can return to school at night and learn about the universe by taking part in hands on learning activities and star gazing before setting up camp and sleeping in the school hall overnight.

We are proud to be a Fairtrade Achiever School which is recognised for its commitment to promoting the importance of Fairtrade. We promote the work of Fairtrade as a way of supporting those global communities that provide many of the foods we enjoy. As well as participating in Fairtrade Fortnight the children have opportunities to learn about the lives of farmers from around the world and how choosing fairtrade improves their lives.

Our wonderful grounds provide us with a fantastic platform to teaching gardening skills. We have an after school gardening club that grows fruit and vegetables in both our class polytunnel and raised bed planters. We enter the Great Yorkshire Show Veg Box Competition every year with great success. We also have won Harrogate in Bloom Awards for our gardening work. We want every child to experience the joy of growing your own food and enjoying the results.
