At Richard Taylor Primary School, our curriculum is built to inspire, challenge and support every child. We want all pupils to grow into responsible, confident and curious learners who are ready to shape their futures.

While firmly rooted in the National Curriculum, we go beyond its expectations by providing rich, meaningful and memorable learning experiences for all children.

Our curriculum is designed to be fully equitable for every child.  We prioritise early identification of barriers and provide high‑quality support and tailored adaptations so that every learner can engage meaningfully with the full curriculum. Our approach ensures that disadvantaged pupils, those with SEND, and those facing additional challenges experience the same breadth, depth, and high expectations as their peers.

Our Curriculum Vision

We aim to deliver an inspiring and ambitious education for every child. Guided by our school values of respect, trust and service, we aim for all pupils to flourish spiritually, academically, personally, socially and morally.

Our curriculum:

  • Builds knowledge progressively and purposefully
  • Develops skills that help children apply their learning with confidence and independence
  • Provides an oracy‑rich environment where pupils learn through talk – and learn how to talk
  • Encourages curiosity, critical thinking and problem solving
  • Responds to the needs of our community and our changing world
  • Embeds climate change education by integrating knowledge, emotional resilience and opportunities for collective action
  • Ensures every child feels included, valued and able to thrive as a child of God

Our curriculum is carefully sequenced to help pupils make meaningful connections across subjects and deepen their learning over time. Staff draw on research, best practice and collaboration with Yorkshire Causeway Schools Trust (YCST) leaders and subject networks to continually develop and refine our curriculum.

We know that every child is unique. Teachers adapt their approaches and personalise learning to ensure all pupils experience appropriate challenge and support.

We are committed to a “windows, mirrors and doors” approach:

  • Windows provide views into diverse lives and perspectives, helping pupils challenge stereotypes, appreciate differences and develop empathy
  • Mirrors allow children to see themselves and their experiences reflected in what they learn
  • Doors allow children to use the knowledge and understanding that they learn to make connections and see themselves as confident learners and active citizens able to make a difference to the world around them.
Structure and Organisation

Our curriculum is taught through discrete subjects, each planned within a one‑ or two‑year rolling programme to ensure full coverage.

Although we have nine classes, children who start school in Reception will move through seven classes during their time with us. Our bespoke progression maps ensure that, whichever pathway pupils take, they experience the full National Curriculum through a broad range of meaningful contexts.

A Curriculum That Helps Children Flourish

Through a balanced approach that values academic challenge, creativity, enrichment and personal development, we support children to:

  • Build strong and secure subject knowledge
  • Develop essential skills for future learning
  • Understand and value their place in the world
  •  Develop the ability to be reflective about their own beliefs and perspective on life
  • Have a knowledge of, and respect for, different people’s faiths, feelings and values
  • Grow into thoughtful, responsible and enthusiastic learners
